Eagles Instantly Upgrade Secondary with Mitchell, DeJean Picks
The Philadelphia Eagles’ secondary took a big hit during the final stretch of the 2023 NFL season, ultimately ending in a 32-9 Wildcard loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the game, quarterback Baker Mayfield shredded the Eagles’ defense for 426 total yards, a performance that general manager Howie Roseman is determined to avoid.
The organization led by Roseman, decided to shore up the secondary with the additions of Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell in the first round and Iowa’s defensive back Cooper DeJean in round two.
Mitchell, a 22-year-old cornerback from the University of Toledo, won back-to-back First-team All-MAC honors and started 40 games during his college stint with the Rockets.
Statistically speaking, Mitchell put up impressive numbers and was not only a physical cornerback but also is very quick on his feet after running a 4.33 40-yard dash time at the Combine.
Mitchell’s Career Statistics:
- 122 Tackles
- Two INTs for TDs
- 46 Pass Deflections
- 6.5 Tackles for Loss
- 6 Interceptions
Defensive back Cooper DeJean was considered one of the most versatile athletes coming out of the NFL Draft.
The fact that the Eagles ended up with him ignited the social media scene with countless memes about Roseman and his ability to draft strong athletes.
Some comments included, “Howie Masterclass”, “Howie Roseman has won the draft”, “How did we get the best two DBs in the draft??”, and lastly, “Howie is a mastermind.” These fan comments really puts into perspective just how much respect DeJean gets and how impactful he will be in the secondary in 2024 and beyond.

DeJean’s Career Statistics:

- 3 INTs for TDs
- 13 Pass Deflections
- 5 Tackles for Loss
- 7 Interceptions
Final Thoughts:
Down the stretch the Eagles secondary and entire defense took a major blow and there is no question that fixing this issue was a top priority. The fact that Roseman got two of the best defensive backs in the entire draft really shows the hard work and preparation that goes into his team and their scouting/ draft preparation.
We’ll undoubtedly hear Mitchell and DeJean’s names for years to come. They’re poised to make significant impact on the secondary from day one.
There should be no more communication issues on the back end and quality football will be played once again on defense in The City of Brotherly Love.
