Eagles Are Silently Winning NFL Free Agency, Offseason

After heading into week 12 with a solid 10-1 record, the Philadelphia Eagles lost five out of their last six games falling to 11-6 before heading into their Wild Card matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The fall from grace was mainly due to coaching staff issues and the struggling production on all three phases of the game.

This offseason has been extremely productive from the Eagles front office and head coach Nick Sirianni. They began by hiring a new offensive coordinator in Kellen Moore, who comes from the Los Angeles Chargers and before that the Dallas Cowboys. Moore brings a new scheme and focuses on a teaching approach that caters to his offensive athletes and their strengths. This would be considered a better hire than the previous coordinator in Brian Johnson, who just never panned out as a play caller.

The next big move was to hire a new defensive coordinator after what was considered a tumultuous defensive coaching staff. Coach Sirianni demoted Sean Desai and of all of the individuals that took his place it was former Lions head coach Matt Patricia, who has a questionable track record amongst the players. It could be argued that the Eagles took a major step back after this decision was made and the defense never made any strides to improve their blown coverages and other fundamental issues.

Considering Sirianni’s job was most likely on the line this offseason, hiring Moore and then Vic Fangio for the defensive coordinator position will prove very important for this young and talented Eagles team.

Offseason Free Agency Moves:

As of the writing of this article, the Eagles hired two new coordinators with plenty of experience in their field and during free agency signed a few big named players who can contribute and improve the team’s abilities.

  • Saquon Barkley
  • Bryce Huff
  • Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
  • Devin White
  • DeVante Parker
  • Zack Baun
  • Matt Hennessy
  • Kenny Pickett (via Trade)
  • And… Many More in the Coming Weeks

Signing Barkley is a great move for the offense and Moore. Establishing a running game is one of the things that the Eagles did at a decent rate in 2023. They utilized their RPO (Run, Pass Option) scheme a good deal with quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Barkley is an upgrade from D’Andre Swift, who rushed for 1,049 yards on 229 attempts, a 4.6 average and five rushing touchdowns. Expect Barkley to go over the 1k rushing mark in 2024 due to his dynamic abilities, if he does indeed stay healthy.

Bryce Huff is coming from the New York Jets where he honestly was a staple on defense. It was shocking that the Jets front office did not sign him to a long-term contract extension as he was a valuable asset to their organization.

Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is coming back to the Eagles after spending a short stint with the Lions. As a member of the Eagles in 2022, Gardner-Johnson compiled 79 total tackles, eight pass deflections, six interceptions and two sacks, these are both regular season and post season combined. Fangio should be ecstatic to implement him in his defensive scheme and he will again be a young play maker as he is only 26 years old.

Devin White is another 26 year old former first round draft selection who has made his mark in the league. He won a Super Bowl, reached the Pro Bowl, and has over 500 total tackles, 23 sacks, three interceptions, 21 pass deflections, six forced fumbles, nine fumble recovers and two defensive touchdowns since coming into the league in 2019. He still has it and will be the main source of tackling and communication on defense.

DeVante Parker spent two seasons with the New England Patriots where he did not make plays like his Miami Dolphins days. He is, however, a 6’3″ receiver who can win 50/50 jump balls and is a solid red zone threat for Hurts. Expect Parker to improve upon his lackluster 394 yard season and be a solid contributor on offense in 2024.

A name you may not be too familiar with unless you watched the New Orleans Saints is linebacker Zach Baun. A former third round pick from Wisconsin in 2020, Baun was a key special teams contributor for the Saints before having a role on defense. He missed some time in 2022 with a calf injury but should be all healthy and ready to go. He signed a one year contract and is a depth and special teams player.

Matt Hennessy fills one of the most important roles on the offense – center. With the departure of Jason Kelce to retirement, Hennessy who comes from the Atlanta Falcons will compete for the starting center role in 2024. He signed just another one year contract and if he wins the competition and does well enough, a future extension should be on the horizon.

On Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles traded for former first round quarterback Kenny Pickett from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickett will join the Eagles pending a physical and the organization gave the Steelers a 2024 third round draft pick (No. 98) along with two future 2025 seventh-round picks in exchange for Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick.

The addition of Pickett to the Eagles gives the 25-year-old quarterback a fresh beginning after failing to make his mark in the Steel City. Pickett will be in a quarterback friendly system and will grow due to the coaching staff and learning under Jalen Hurts.

Wrap Up:

Ultimately, the Eagles are having a solid free agency and offseason. They hired two new coordinators with previous play calling experience and are rebuilding their team with some big named free agent athletes.

It will be up to the coaching staff to mesh well with the new players and teach them their scheme at a high level. If they do indeed mesh well and the players buy in, the 2024 Eagles should win double digit games again, with a goal of winning playoff games and reaching their third Super Bowl within the last decade.
