Did Green Bay Cost Themselves A Super Bowl In 2020 By Drafting Jordan Love?

This was the million dollar question that was semi-answered by Jordan Love after his spectacular 2023 season that saw him throw for 32 touchdowns (second-most in the NFL). The Packers, in just year one of Love, made it to within 15 minutes of the NFC Championship Game. This is what GM Brian Gutekunst and management were hoping for after they selected Love with their first-round pick back in 2020.

However, they did take a risk. They chose to draft a backup quarterback for the next three seasons instead of selecting an immediate impact player like 1,000-yard receiver Tee Higgins or Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Queen.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers wasn’t really showing any signs of slowing down as he would go on to win back-to-back MVPs. But, even he couldn’t overcome a mediocre defense. That is why the addition of a tough linebacker like Queen, who has recorded over 450 total tackles in his first four seasons (PFR), would’ve been a great move for a team that was missing a great defender in the middle their defense.

Or, perhaps adding a talented receiver like Higgins could’ve helped Green Bay’s offense overcome an elite Bucs defense in the 2021 NFC Championship Game. After all, he did record 3,028 receiving yards over his first three seasons. with the Bengals. He would’ve added another element to Matt LaFleur’s aerial attack. Without him, all Tampa had to do was lock down Davante Adams. They did exactly that, and even the great No. 12 couldn’t overcome that, especially without All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari.

Yes, Jordan Love is a fantastic quarterback now. Yes, they should be in Super Bowl contention for years to come. But, the Packers could’ve drafted an impactful playmaker on either side of the ball to help them win the Super Bowl immediately. Then, they could’ve found another developmental prospect in the next draft or two.

It all depends on how fans and NFL personnel look at it. As of now, Green Bay is moving forward with their elite quarterback in Love as they search for another Super Bowl.
