Despite the statistics, Lions QB Jared Goff is just a proven winner
One of the most impressive things that I read today on social media was how much of a winner Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is. Not just in the National Football League but at all levels beginning with his high school career.
Prior to Jared Goff attending his high school, the school had a 19-16 record, barely maintaining an above .500 record. After Goff arrived at Marin Catholic in Kentfield, California, the winning began to increase.
Goff led his high school football team to a 39-4 record winning multiple playoff games throughout the process and in 2012 he played in the Division III Championship game. Winning at the high school level has provided him his next challenge and that would be to turn around a University that had a 4-20 record (2012 and 2013 combined). This challenge would prove to be extremely difficult but Goff led the Cal collegiate program to 8 wins and the Armed Forces Bowl Championship in 2015.
Here are some of the records that Goff broke at Cal.
- Passing Yards (12,220)
- Passing Yards per Game (329.7)
- Touchdown Passes (96)
Goff’s winning success would take yet another challenge as he looked to improve an NFL program on the brink of collapse. In 2016, the then St. Louis Rams were coming off a 7-9 record under head coach Jeff Fisher. They looked to improve upon that record but failed to do so dropping to 4-9 before naming special teams coordinator John Fassel the interim coach. Fassel finished with a 0-3 record and the team ended the 2016 season and Goff’s rookie campaign with a 4-12 record.
In Goff’s first year as the full-time starter, he took them to an 11-5 record and was a proven winner for the five seasons he was there.
As a full-time starter, not including the abysmal 2016 season which he was thrown into the fire, Goff finished his Rams tenure with 42 wins and 20 losses, including a Super Bowl appearance.
TRADE TO LIONS:
Goff was traded to the Detroit Lions on March 18, 2021 in exchange for quarterback Matthew Stafford and a haul of draft picks. In his first full season as a starter, it was tough but the Lions were competitive in every single game despite a lackluster roster. They finished 3-13-1.
The following season the Lions turned the ship around and finished with a 9-8 record, a true winning season (above .500) for the first time since 2016.
This season the Lions won the Division for the first time since 1993 and the very first time ever as part of the NFC North. Goff and company have a 12-5 record and are heading into playoff contention versus the team that he was drafted by in 2016 with the first overall selection.
THROW STATS OUT THE WINDOW… GOFF JUST WINS:
Ultimately, Jared Goff is a winner. Each stop that he makes he turns the franchise and/or program around and it has been proven whenever he lands. The Detroit Lions are on the brink of a playoff win if all goes right this weekend for the first time in 33 years (1991).
Without the statistics, Goff’s impact might not be as apparent, but from a pure winning standpoint, it’s safe to say his impact on the field and his abilities translate directly to wins. For this reason, he is one impactful athlete at the most important position on the field.
