Chad Johnson Crowns Revis’ 2009 as Best Defensive Back Season Ever

On a recent episode of Roommates Show, hosted by Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Matt Hillman, former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson from the Cincinnati Bengals discussed various topics during his time in the league.

One topic that was quite interesting to hear about is Johnson’s comments about former All-Pro defensive back Darelle Revis of the New York Jets. Revis’ 2009 season in which the team reached the AFC Championship Game before losing to the Indianoplis Colts 30-17, is considered to be the “best season in NFL history for any defensive back.”

Johnson was asked on the podcast who was one athlete that he has respect for and knew there was going to be a battle when the two athletes faced off. Johnson said, “Revis. Probably the one time I was ever stopped… back to back. His 2009 season should go down as the best season of all time for any DB, regardless of past DB accolades.”

Johnson continued praising Revis by mentioning how deserving he is of the Hall of Fame jacket and how he deserves his utmost respect even though he always plays around with him and others.

Revis’ statistics were quite impressive but nothing showcases just how much of a lockdown cornerback he was during his prime than this graphic.

The 24-year-old cornerback at the time held many notable wide receivers under 35 yards. The list included:

  • Andre Johnson
  • Randy Moss (Twice)
  • Marques Colston
  • Terrell Owens (Twice)
  • Torry Holt
  • Steve Smith
  • Reggie Wayne
  • Chad Ochocinco (Johnson)

Now here is the list with the receivers and their 2009 final statistics.

  • Andre Johnson – 101 receptions for 1,569 yards and 9 touchdowns
  • Randy Moss – 83 receptions for 1,264 yards and 13 touchdowns
  • Marques Colston – 85 receptions for 1,262 yards and 10 touchdowns
  • Terrell Owens – 55 receptions for 829 yards and 5 touchdowns
  • Torry Holt – 51 receptions for 722 yards and 0 touchdowns
  • Steve Smith – 65 receptions for 982 yards and 7 touchdowns
  • Reggie Wayne – 116 receptions for 1,428 yards and 11 touchdowns
  • Chad Ochocinco (Johnson) – 72 receptions for 1,047 yards and 9 touchdowns

That is a total yards of 8,056 and Revis held each of them to under 35-yards, which is extremely hard to do in today’s NFL. His 2009 season was one for the ages.

Revis left the Jets in 2013 to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and spent just one season there before winning the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2014.

The Jets brought back Revis in 2015, and he reunited and provided a much needed spark for the organization. The team finished with a winning record 10-6, but missed the playoffs. He finished his reunion season with 39 total tackles, 9 pass deflections, 5 interceptions, and made the Pro Bowl.

Even though Chad Johnson is a polarizing figure and is known for his joking manner on and off the field, he still is a top tier NFL receiver of all time and mentioning how much of an impact Revis had on his career is quite respectable and great to witness.
