Breaking: Packers Sign Veteran Kicker Greg Joseph
There has been rumblings about this ever since rookie kicker Anders Carlson missed a crucial 43-yard field goal attempt against the 49ers that arguably cost Green Bay a chance at an NFC Championship Game berth. But, it finally happened. The Packers have brought in a veteran kicker to at the very least compete with Carlson.
According to agent Brett Tessler, Green Bay is set to sign his client, former Vikings kicker Greg Joseph to a one-year deal. He spent the previous three seasons in Minnesota with the rival Vikings. The former Super Bowl champion has a career success rate of 82.6% on field goals. He has missed just one career field goal attempt in between 20 and 39 yards. Carlson missed a total of 11 kicks last season, and that includes extra points. Additionally, Joseph holds the NFL record for most game-winners in a season with five. He also led the NFL in touchback percentage in 2021.
Again, he will come to the Packers to at least compete with Carlson. Competition is always great when a team needs a player or a position group to be at their best. Green Bay is ready to win a Super Bowl right now. The kicking game can always mean the difference between making a deep playoff run and going home early. Had Matt LaFleur had a consistent kicking game last season, maybe the Packers bring a title back to Titletown.
The Packer can’t lose in this situation. Either they get an experienced kicker with a big leg (his longest career field goal is 61 yards; a Vikings record). Or, their young kicker grows and becomes a really steady player for them. Time will certain tell as the season inches closer.
