A look at new Browns Wide Receiver Kadarius Toney
Earlier this week the news was announced that the Cleveland Browns were signing former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney. The 6’ 00” 193 lbs. wide receiver was a first-round pick of the New York Giants in the 20221 NFL Draft. He was the 20th overall pick in that draft. In 2022, he was traded by the New York Giants to the Kansas City Chief for a third-round pick. With Kansas City his special teams play helped them win Super Bowl LVII. After injuries and on field struggles, he was eventually let go by the Chiefs. Kansas City declined to give him a fifth-year option on his contract last May. That was effectively making him a free agent after the 2024 season. On August 27th he was released by the Chiefs. And he was free to sign with any team that would take him.
This week it was reported that Toney was signing with the Cleveland Browns. It is a regular practice of Browns general manager Andrew Berry to sign former first round picks that didn’t work out with their previous teams. He has done that with defensive tackles Shelby Harris and Maurice Hearst. Berry is hoping to replicate similar success.
Kadarius Toney could be a valuable return specialist for the Browns. He set a Super Bowl record for a 65-yard punt return in Super Bowl LVII. He surpassed the previous record set by Jordan Norwood for a 60-yard punt return in Super Bowl 50. That skillset along with depth at wide receiver would make him a welcomed asset to the Browns. This signing is a low-risk high reward move for Andrew Berry and the Browns. And after last week’s offensive performance this team can use all the help it can get.
