A look at Andrew Berry’s Draft Picks

On Sunday November 17th the Cleveland Browns will continue their 2024 season in New Orleans Louisiana. The team was off last week for their bye week. During that time Cleveland Browns fans, podcasters, and reporters took the time to reflect on the disappointment of the 2024 season and what the team might do moving forward into the future. One of those reflections is the job of Browns general manager Andrew Berry. I wanted to take time to look back at his draft picks.

Andrew Berry’s first draft was 2020, in that draft the Browns acquired LT Jed Wills from Alabama, S Grant Delpit from LSU, and C Nick Harris from Washington are still on the team. His second draft was 2021, he drafted CB Greg Newsome II from Northwestern and LB Jerimiah Owusu-Koramoah from Notre Dame are still on the team. In 2022 with no first round pick he drafted CB Martin Emerson Jr from Mississippi State, DE Alex Wright from UAB, RB Jerome Ford from Cincinnati, and WR Michael Woods II from Oklahoma are still with the team. In 2023 Berry drafted WR Cedric Tillman from Tennessee, OT Dawand Jones from Ohio State, DE Isiah McGuire from Missouri, CB Cameron Mitchell from Northwestern, QB Dorian Thomson-Robinson, and C Luke Wypler from Ohio State. In 2024 Andrew Berry drafted DT Michael Hall Jr from Ohio State, G Zack Zinter from Michigan, and WR Jamari Thrash from Louisville. On this list are players that still have potential and other players that don’t anymore. It is hard judge a draft for any team for at least 2 years after that draft.

A long time ago Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar said that “if you hit on 49% of your draft picks, you will end up in Canton.” He is right about that. It is impossible to hit on every draft pick. After looking at only the draft picks since 2020, Andrew Berry did a good job of drafting talent. He has had other ways of acquiring talent from trades and free agency. He was competent in doing that as well. Unfortunately, his legacy may be tied to one big swing and miss at quarterback Deshaun Watson. Or his legacy could be how the team recovered from it? We will have to wait and see.
