3 Way-Too-Early Draft Targets For Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders won their first two games of the season but it has been a free fall since.
Washington has now lost eight of its last 10 games and there might not be many more wins in sight. The Commanders are preparing for a matchup with the Miami Dolphins before their bye week. After that, the opponents are the Los Angeles Rams, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Dallas Cowboys. There is a legitimate chance that Washington finishes with four or five wins this season.
The good news is, that would land the team with one of the top picks in the 2024 NFL Draft and there will be a new regime making decisions.
Owner Josh Harris already made the decision to fire defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and Ron Rivera seems to be on his way out following the regular season. Harris will focus on bringing in a new General Manager and Head Coach ahead of the draft.
The Commanders have plenty of pieces for next season but also a lot of holes to fill. There are many intriguing options in the top five of the draft and these three should be on Washington’s radar already.
3. Joe Alt, Notre Dame
Joe Alt was a three-year starter for Notre Dame and has the potential of starting in his first year in the NFL.
At 6-foot-8, 320 pounds, Alt has the size needed to compete at the next level. He also has the intelligence and all intangibles to be a starting tackle. For Washington, this is clearly its biggest need heading into the offseason. Alt is projected to go early in the first round and likely will be a Top 10 pick come April. It will be interesting to see how Washington views Alt as it continues to move up the draft order.
2. Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State
Marvin Harrison Jr. was the best receiver in college football this season and one of the best prospects at the position in quite some time. If he is there for the Commanders, it would be hard to resist. Sometimes, you have to draft the best player available and in today’s NFL, a wide receiver is important.
Let’s lay a few things out. First, Washington might have found its quarterback of the future in Sam Howell. He has shown all things needed for the team to be comfortable to build around him. With a better offensive line and another legitimate wide receiver, Howell will be even better. Second, Washington has jumped the Chicago Bears’ second pick in the first round. There were talks about the Bears adding a quarterback and Harrison in the top two or three. Now, the Commanders might be in a position to draft the Buckeye and could even move up further.
Finally, Terry McLaurin is a star. Anyone who thinks otherwise and is ready to give up on him is not thinking straight. Harrison on the other side of McLaurin would immediately be one of the top receiving duos in the league. You have to be able to score in the league today. If Harrison is on the board, it will be difficult to pass.
1. Olu Fashanu, Penn State
The one player that would make it difficult to pass on Harrison is Old Fashanu of Penn State. The All-World left tackle that has not allowed a sack during his time with the Nittany Lions. That is almost hard to imagine.
This seems to fall into place for Washington. It is likely that both will not be there at No. 4. Of course, Washington could move up or down in the draft order depending on how the season finishes. The decision could be made for them. However, if they move up, the Commanders might have to choose between them. If the regime views Fashanu as another Trent Williams, this is a no-brainer.
The major issue for Washington since the preseason was the offensive line. Howell has taken sacks as a historic rate but there is not much he can do behind this abysmal line that River and company put together. Fashanu is viewed as the best tackle in the draft and will be taken with one of the first picks in the draft.
