2024 NFL Draft Player Profile: USC QB Caleb Williams

We are excited about our draft coverage here at FFSN this year, as we are adding something new to the fold. Between now and the NFL Draft, I will be writing individual player profiles on many of this year’s top prospects. Today, we continue the series with USC QB Caleb Williams.

Each of these breakdowns will include a brief background on the player, an in-depth scouting report, and a projection as to where he is likely to be selected in the NFL Draft. All of these articles can be found on our main FFSN NFL feed. Be sure to share these breakdowns with your fellow draft buddies on social media!

Bio and Profile

Height: 6’1″
Weight: 215 lbs

Williams was highly touted since his days in high school, but he chose to play under Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma, despite Spencer Rattler being set as the starter. After Rattler’s struggles and eventual transfer, Williams took over as the starter, and when Lincoln Riley took the job at USC, Williams followed suit. Winning the Heisman Trophy following the 2022 season, Williams set just about every single-season passing record at USC, from passing yards, to total touchdowns, to completions, to passing yards. In 2023, Williams was not quite as prolific in clutch moments, but he did enough to remain the consensus number one prospect in this class.

Scouting Report

Williams’ comparison to Patrick Mahomes may be the most blasphemous comparison in this entire draft class. Williams has outstanding potential at the NFL level, but he does not possess the uncanny instincts of Mahomes. His combination of arm strength, mobility, and accuracy are wonderful attributes to possess as a quarterback, but a major concern of mine is that Williams did not elevate the performance of those around him in 2023. He may not have had a Jordan Addison at his disposal in 2023, but his supporting cast of weapons was still better than what most teams had. His decision-making was questionable at times, but I believe that will improve in time.

My biggest concern with Williams’ game is honestly his attitude. I do not like using the term “crybaby” on a prospect, but if we are being fair, Williams has not faced much adversity during his time in college. Looking back at his collegiate career, he was faced with minimal difficulty and given everything on a silver platter. From his transfer, to his coach, to his surrounding weapons, he has gotten his way wherever he has gone, and that would be at least a minor concern of mine. It sounds as if he has opened up to the idea of going to Chicago, which was once a major question. Nonetheless, Caleb Williams is an incredible talent who has the upside of an elite NFL quarterback.

Draft Projection

I could see Jayden Daniels potentially overtaking Williams by the time we get to the draft, but I still believe he is the most likely candidate to go number one overall. He is number three on my overall draft board currently, with Marvin Harrison, Jr. and Jayden Daniels slightly above him. Regardless of who Chicago takes at Pick 1, I do not see any way Williams slides past Washington at Pick 2.
