NFL Head Coach Predictions: How Will Opening Be Filled This Offseason?
There are just seven football games left this season and then the offseason will be in full effect. Even though the playoffs are still going on, there are many coaching candidates that will be taking virtual interviews this week.
The New England Patriots hired Jerod Mayo as their new head coach last week and this took away one position. Now, there are seven current openings and we are still awaiting the fate of Mike McCarthy and Nick Sirianni.
As we sit here following Wild Card Weekend, check out how each coaching vacancy could be filled.
Atlanta Falcons: Bill Belichick – The Falcons are not interested in a rebuild but are looking to add a quarterback and head coach to go with their talent offensively. Belichick interviewed for the job over the weekend. These sides have been linked since the start and the dynamic makes sense.
The Falcons have a Top 10 pick that they could use on a quarterback. The offense already features Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. With Belichick coaching the defense, the Falcons could be an intriguing team in the NFC South next season if this is the hire.
Carolina Panthers: Bobby Slowik – Could the Panthers actually keep a head coach for a full season in 2024-25? Slowik might be the best option for a team with a bit of turmoil at the moment.
Carolina has shown interest in Ben Johnson but there are better landing spots for the top candidate this cycle. Slowik has done great work with rookie CJ Stroud this season and has become a big reason why the Houston Texans have turned it around right away. This is what the Panthers need with Bryce Young under center. This would give Carolina a young coach and quarterback combination to be excited about.
Las Vegas Raiders: Antonio Pierce – The Raiders might be pressured into hiring Pierce full-time but that is not the worst idea for the franchise moving forward.
Pierce took over as the interim once Josh McDaniels was fired and did a tremendous job with the current situation. He gained the support of many veteran players including Maxx Crosby, who said he would ask for a trade if Pierce was not named the next head coach. Pierce has the support of the locker room and knows how to get the most out of his guys. Pair that with his overall knowledge of the game and this is a home run for the Raiders.
Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh – It might take a lot for Harbaugh to be lured away from Michigan but he has been linked to the NFL for years now and it seems to be the most intense it has been.
If Harbaugh is going to leave the Wolverines, it will have to be for a team that is ready to win now. The Chargers fit that bill, mainly because the quarterback is in place. Justin Herbert makes the Chargers a desirable job right away. This will be Harbaugh’s first interview and who knows if he will take anymore. It could be a situation where he has his eye on Los Angeles and if it doesn’t work out, he can stay in Ann Arbor.
Seattle Seahawks: Mike Macdonald – Macdonald is one of the bright, rising stars in the NFL. He could be the next great, young head coach and this makes him a fit in Seattle already.
Pete Carroll leaving his post on the sideline for the front office is one of the more shocking moves of the offseason. Now, the Seahawks could be looking for another players’ coach with plenty of energy. Macdonald has helped build the best defense in the league in Baltimore and this was the trend for Seattle when it was competing for championships.
Tennessee Titans: Dan Quinn – Quinn has been linked to many teams and will be taking interviews all week. It is clear that the Cowboys will be looking for a new defensive coordinator but the question is, where will Quinn land?
There are many fanbases that do not want to take the chance after his first stint in Atlanta and Dallas’ performance on Wild Card Weekend. The Titans could be an interesting landing spot after moving on from Mike Vrabel. Quinn could bring his defensive scheme to Tennessee while bringing in the right coordinator to work with Will Levis and the offense.
Washington Commanders: Ben Johnson – What day and age are we in that the top coaching candidate could end up in Washington? We already saw the top executive in Adam Peters join the Commanders and it has been reported that Johnson is his top target.
Washington has arguably the best situation in the league this offseason. It has the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and the most cap space in the league. Johnson, a great offensive mind, would be able to draft his quarterback and already has pieces in place with Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Brian Robinson.
New owner Josh Harris has shown that he will pay to do what is best for the team and is working the change the culture in D.C. If Johnson joins Peters in Washington, this could check off two major needs for the Commanders with the best possible candidates.
