NFC East Round Up: Week 1

Each week, we’re going to take a look at our NFC East rivals, because let’s be honest, we’re haters. Week 1 had some good matchups, and well, not-so-good matchups. Let’s take a look at what happened around the NFC East. As always, we go in order by divisional standings.

Philadelphia Eagles (1-0)

If you’ve followed me, you’ve probably already read my takeaways from Friday night’s game in Brazil. If you haven’t, you can read them here. The Eagles won 34-29, and while it didn’t look pretty at times, there was plenty to like. Saquon Barkley looked elite, and the Eagles’ defense played well despite the poor field conditions. If you’ve watched the all-22, you can see that the Eagles’ defensive scheme this year is going to make opposing QBs think. Offensively, Jalen Hurts had some lapses in judgment, but overall, I was impressed—especially with the play-calling. Kellen Moore’s stock is up for me. The Eagles also walked away from the game healthy and will face the Falcons next week on Monday Night Football.

Dallas Cowboys (1-0)

Before the Cowboys even took the field this afternoon, they made headlines as QB Dak Prescott signed a 4-year, $240M contract extension. Once the game started, they dominated the Browns in nearly every aspect. The Cowboys defeated Cleveland 33-17 in a nationally televised matchup, showing that Browns QB Deshaun Watson might be one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league. Watson finished with 24/45 for 169 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs, struggling under pressure all game.

The Browns had no answer for Dallas’ relentless pass rush, as Watson was sacked 6 times and hit 17 (!) more times. Their rushing attack didn’t fare much better, managing only 93 yards.

Offensively, the Cowboys weren’t flashy, but they were efficient. Ezekiel Elliott looked solid in his first game back in Dallas, and CeeDee Lamb continued to show why he should be considered one of the top wide receivers in the league. He finished with 5 receptions for 61 yards and added 3 rushes for 25 yards. While the stat line wasn’t crazy, Lamb was getting open with ease. Unfortunately, TE Jake Ferguson left the game with a knee/leg injury, so that’s something to monitor throughout the week.

Next up, the Cowboys will host the New Orleans Saints next Sunday at 1 PM EST.

Washington Commanders (0-1)

The Commanders fall to 0-1 after a 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers. Jayden Daniels made his first career start, and honestly, it wasn’t bad at all. The team around him, however, isn’t the strongest. Outside of proven veteran Terry McLaurin, most of his other targets are either past their prime or still developing.

When Daniels takes off and runs, it’s exciting—he reminds me of a young Mike Vick (I know, it’s only Week 1). On the day, he ran 16 times for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns, though he did have 3 fumbles (not great!). As a passer, there’s room for improvement. He completed 17/24 for 184 yards, which isn’t bad, but he wasn’t pushing the ball downfield much. Most of his completions went to running backs Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler (101 of his 184 passing yards went to RBs). There’s definitely potential with Daniels, and if he can figure out his intermediate-to-deep passing game, he could be a real threat.

Defensively, the Commanders did a solid job against the run, allowing only 112 yards on 30 carries (3.7 yards per carry). However, their pass defense struggled, as Baker Mayfield had a field day, finishing 24/30 for 289 yards and 4 TDs. If the Commanders want to win games with their rookie QB, they’re going to need a better defensive performance.

Next up, Washington will host the New York Giants in a divisional matchup next Sunday at 1 PM EST.

New York Giants (0-1)

What a disaster for the Giants. As they celebrate their 100th season with a new uniform and that throwback logo on the field, they walked away in defeat, losing to the Vikings 28-6. Daniel Jones, the QB the Giants decided to pay instead of Saquon Barkley, went 22 for 42 for 186 yards and 2 INTs. On top of that, he was sacked 5 times. I was excited for Malik Nabers (for fantasy purposes), and while he didn’t disappoint (5 catches for 66 yards), it’s hard not to imagine what he’d look like with a decent QB. The Vikings got off to a hot start, with Sam Darnold going 10/10 for 152 yards and a touchdown at one point (151.2 passer rating). The defense looked uninspired, and why would they be? I’m not sure how much longer this franchise can roll Daniel Jones out onto the field.

The Giants travel to Landover, Maryland, to face the Washington Commanders in a divisional game next Sunday at 1 PM EST.
