New York Giants Needs To Focus On WR In 2024 NFL Draft

The New York Giants hold the sixth-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

There have been rumors about the Giants moving up to select a quarterback in the draft but that is not the best option for the team right now. The Giants need to stay where they are and land one of the best wide receivers in the draft.

Yes, this is a deep class of receivers. That has been the discussion when you look at all teams that can look to land one in the later rounds. The different is, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik Nabers will not be around.

Let’s look at potential options here.

First, we know that the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders will be selecting quarterbacks. Next, the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals have made their picks available. If a quarterback is selected third, this means there is a chance one of the wide receivers falls to New York. This depends on what the Los Angeles Chargers do at No. 5, where they have been linked to tackle Joe Alt.

If a quarterback goes with each of the top four picks, the Giants will for sure in be in line to land one of the top receivers. If Los Angeles drafts Alt, then Harrison Jr. is a Giant. If Arizona stays put and takes Harrison at four, the Giants could still land Nabers.

It would become interesting if the Cardinals take a receiver and the Chargers throw a wrinkle into it and take the other. This remains a possibility since Jim Harbaugh came in and traded Keenan Allen while Mike Williams was released.

There are many options and landing a wide receiver makes sense for the Giants because they need a game-breaking weapon.

Saquon Barkley is now in Philadelphia. He was the only weapon over the years that could score every time he touches the ball. The Giants have not had this on the outside since Odell Beckham Jr. Now, fans are trying to be sold on Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt — good, not great. Throw Harrison Jr. or Nabers into the mix and there is something for Daniel Jones to work with.

And this brings us to our final point and that is the situation surrounding Jones.

Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll did not select Jones. This means entering year three of the new regime, they did not bring in their quarterback. There is time. Jones is not going anywhere this year and is slated to make $40 million. He has shown that he can compete when healthy but the problem is, he can’t stay healthy. Give Jones a shot this year and bring in a veteran backup in case he goes down.

The Giants need talent. There is plenty of value in selecting the best available player. If Harrison Jr. is there, New York might land the best-overall player in the draft. Nabers is a great alternative as well. Either way, the Giants need talent and adding a receiver gives them that immediately.
