Round 1 of the 12-team college football tournament was a dud

Ever look forward to something so much that the reality of that something doesn’t even come close to meeting your expectations?

You were probably hugely disappointed if you were looking forward to the first round of the first-ever 12-team college football national championship tournament with great excitement.

Unless you were a huge Notre Dame/Penn State/Texas/Ohio State fan. In that case, there is nothing for you to see here. Please, move on. Go engage in some smack talk on social media. You’ve earned it.

As for the rest of us more neutral supporters of college football, we were hoping for at least one “One Shining Moment” to savor during the first round.

Instead, we got four blowouts over the course of two days. Not only was every game a blowout, but the home teams with the higher seeds won all the matchup. You know what that meant, right? That meant that the most memorable thing to come from the first-ever first round of the 12-team college football national championship tournament was a lot of social media debates about the worthiness of the lesser seeds.

That’s what happens when the average score is 36-17. That’s what happens when the best game is the 27-17 matchup between seventh-seed Notre Dame and 10th-seed Indiana at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, on Friday night…and the Irish led  27-3 with less than two minutes to play.

Ever have to go online and defend Clemson or SMU? I did, and it was gross. I had to stick up for those ACC schools when those smug bullies from the Big Ten and SEC said the committee got it all wrong. They insisted that other schools–mostly, the ones from the Big Ten and SEC–should have received bids, and not Clemson, SMU, Indiana and Tennessee. Sure, Indiana and Tennessee are from the Big Ten and SEC, respectively, but you try to reason with the logic of a fan or media member who talks in absolutes about what would have happened if more worthy teams were invited to the new 12-team college football dance.

I know I shouldn’t say this, but I want Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas and Ohio State to each get their doors blown off in the second round (are we allowed to call it the Elite Eight yet?), just so see what those smug bullies will say about it. If any higher seed does lose in Round 2, I hope it’s not Boise State or Arizona State. Can you imagine the smugness that would be dripping from the finger tips of those social media bullies?

I never thought I’d cheer for the Boise State Broncos, but they’re playing Penn State, a football program with a fan base that couldn’t be more entitled despite its championship drought if it was Notre Dame.

Go Broncos!

Also, go Georgia!

Yes, I know that the Bulldogs are from the mighty SEC, but they’re taking on Notre Dame, and if I’m going to cheer for an entitled fan base, it’s not going to be the one that hasn’t won a national title since 1988.
