Is There A Path To The CFB Playoff For Ohio State?
The CFB Playoff is going to be announced very soon after Championship Weekend.
Right now, there is plenty of chaos that could happen and Ohio State is on the outside looking in waiting for results.
The Buckeyes fell to Michigan for the third consecutive year and lost out on a chance to compete in the Big Ten Championship Game. Now, the 11-1 Buckeyes need this chaos to happen and here is a road map to it.
Washington vs. Oregon – PAC 12 Championship
The winner of this Friday night game does not have much to discuss in terms of the CFB Playoff. Whether it is Oregon or Washington, the winner is in. Where it becomes interesting is if Oregon beats Washington, do the Huskies fight for a bid over the Buckeyes?
It is the age-old debate whether a team should be punished for playing one more game — a Conference Championship. Washington would have one loss, coming to Oregon on Friday, while Ohio State lost to Michigan the week before and did not play an extra game. Now, Washington being alive will be determined by all of the other scenarios playing out but if the Buckeyes are alive, you have to believe that Washington is too.
Oklahoma State vs. Texas – Big 12 Championship
The Big 12 Championship is an important one for these possibilities because of the fact that Texas has one loss. So, if the Longhorns were to lose this game, they would be eliminated with the second loss. The problem is, they are a two-touchdown favorite over a team that should not be much of a challenge. Regardless, this remains one of the most important of the day.
Alabama vs. Georgia – SEC Championship
The SEC title game also remains an integral part of this because Alabama enters with one loss. If they win, the Crimson Tide will steal a spot from a team trying to sneak in. Right now, the playoff format seems pretty set barring any chaos and this would fall under the category of chaos.
Of course, if Alabama and Texas both win, there is the question of who the committee would put in. Texas went to Tuscaloosa and defeated the Crimson Tide early in the season but if Alabama wins, that would be 11 in a row including knocking off the two-time reigning National Champions. This throws another wrinkle into the plans.
Louisville vs. Florida State – ACC Championship
The final game of the night that matters here would be Louisville and Florida State. It is pretty simple, if the Seminoles win and remain unbeaten, they are likely in. Despite losing Jordan Travis to an injury, it would not make sense to leave out a team that has not lost. Now, the committee might be rooting for Louisville because it does not want to be forced to put a team in that does not have its star quarterback.
If Louisville wins, it is no threat to entering the playoff because of the loss factor. If Florida State wins, they will have one of those sports
So, looking at the entire field, if the favorites win, it will be Georgia, Florida State, Michigan, and Oregon. If Texas wins, there will be a question but it would be hard to put the Longhorns above Oregon.
