Natasha Howard Not Returning Makes Some Sense For The Wings

The 2024 Dallas Wings season did not go to expectations by any means. Dallas finished just 9-31, missing the playoffs a season after their best finish in history.

Just one day after their disappointing season ended, the Wings were delivered another shellshock.

Star forward Natasha Howard took to social media to announce that she will not be returning to the Wings in free agency this offseason.

“I would like to thank the Dallas Wings for two great years. It has been a wonderful opportunity to play for the franchise and in front of our loyal fans” Howard said.

“Free agency is upon us and I am focused on exploring every option. I look forward to this next chapter with a new team and new city”.

Despite playing just 27 games this season, Howard had one of the best years in her 11-year career, averaging 17.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a night.

Last season, Howard was a key piece of the Wings team that reached the WNBA semi-finals for the first time in team history.

Howard will have played two seasons with four different franchises including New York, Indiana, Minnesota, and now Dallas.

Typically losing someone who averages 17.6 points a night is a heartbreaker but for the Wings, this move, or lack thereof makes some sense.

Maddy Seigrist will likely slide into Howard’s spot in the starting lineup following her breakout season.

Seigrist jumped from 3.7 points per game last season to 9.4 points this year and is expected to make another jump in 2025.

The Wings will also get younger in that position swapping the 33-year-old Howard for the 24-year-old Siegrist.

Not only does the move clear a spot for Maddy Siegrist but it clears cap space for the Wings to use this offseason.

After being tied up last offseason, the Wings who paid Natasha Howard a combined $462,250 in her two seasons in Dallas will now have that money off the books.

Dallas will likely use some of that money to attempt to bring back Satou Sabally who is an unrestricted free agent.
