Swept Back to Canada: Cleveland Guardians Take Three from Toronto Blue Jays

Even when things go wrong for the Cleveland Guardians, they still go right.

David Fry hurt his elbow, Triston McKenzie didn’t make it to the fourth inning, but the Guardians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 to complete the sweep at Progressive Field on Sunday afternoon.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. mashed a home run into the left-center field bleachers.

Cleveland cut the lead in half when Jose Ramirez scored on an error by Blue Jays right fielder George Springer.

McKenzie gave up another gopher ball in the third inning to Spencer Horwitz. The Cleveland starter has surrendered 17 home runs, tops in the American League.

TAKING CONTROL

The Guardians scored three times in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Daniel Schneemann singled with the bases loaded. Johnathan Rodriguez came up and …

The grounds crew covered the field for a 40-minute rain delay.

Rodriguez stepped back to the plate and finished a based-loaded walk to tie the game.

Brayan Rocchio grounded into a double play to score Bo Naylor with the go-ahead run.

Hmmm, what does that mean in the scorebook?

“No RBI for you!”

Steven Kwan and Josh Naylor increased the Guardians’ lead to 6-3 with solo homers in the fourth inning. Kwan (7) and Naylor (20) already have hit more homers than they did last season, and we’re still in June!

Toronto scored twice in the fifth against debuting Cleveland reliever Darren McCaughan, but the usual suspects in the bullpen finished the job.

Emmanuel Clase collected his 24th save to go with his 0.74 ERA.

Cleveland is 49-26 with a 7.5-game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central Division.

The Guardians will visit the Baltimore Orioles on Monday at 6:35 p.m. Tanner Bibee (5-2) will start for Cleveland against Cade Povich (0-1).
