Seven in Heaven: Cleveland Guardians Use Long Ball to Topple LA Angels 10-4
A day off and a trip to the West Coast did not stop the Cleveland Guardians’ momentum, as they beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-4 last night for their seventh straight victory.
Jose Ramirez continued his offensive heroics with a pair of home runs, while Josh Naylor and David Fry went deep as well. The trio has become a fearsome “meat of the order.”
Logan Allen gave up a home run to Angels second basement Luis Rengifo in the first inning, but he settled down as the Guardians’ offense took over. Allen went 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs, improving his record to 6-2.
Gabriel Arias kick-started Cleveland offense with a game-tying single in the second inning. A wild pitch from Patrick Sandoval (2-7) scored Johnathan Rodriguez to put the Guardians on top for good.
OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT
Ramirez clouted a 419-foot home run to center field in the third inning to put Cleveland on top 4-1. LA cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third, only to be overwhelmed by a five-run explosion from the Guardians in the fourth.
Tyler Freeman’s sacrifice fly scored Kyle Manzardo before Ramirez hit his second dinger of the game, his 14th of the season. Realizing he needed to catch up, Josh Naylor added his 13th homer to chase Sandoval.
David Fry greeted reliever Jose Suarez with another bomb, so the Guardians delivered back-to-back-to-back jacks and enjoyed a 9-2 lead.
Andrez Jimenez wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth.
The Angels got solo home runs from Jo Adell and Logan O’Hoppe to make the final score a little less embarrassing.
Cleveland is in first place in the American League Central Division with a sparkling 34-17 record. The poor Kansas City Royals have also won seven in a row, but they are stuck at 1.5 games behind the Guardians.
In other good news, Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan will rehab his hamstring injury this weekend when he plays for the Lake County Captains.
ANOTHER POT OF COFFEE
Guardians fans can stay up late again tonight, as the teams will meet at 9:38 p.m. Eastern. Tanner Bibee (2-1) will take the mound for Cleveland against the Angels’ Jose Soriano (2-4).
