Red-Hot Guardians Keep the Party Going with Win over Baltimore Orioles

My friends flew in from the East Coast because they’re going to SummerSlam tonight at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Last night, they could have gone to WWE Smackdown at RocketMortgage Fieldhouse.

Instead, they went next door to Progressive Field to watch the Cleveland Guardians beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-4 for their fifth win in a row.

Okay, they did it because it was the 10th anniversary of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

But you get the idea. This team is hot.

COOKIE MONSTER

Carlos Carrasco didn’t get the win, but he should get a lot of credit. In 4 1/3 innings, he held one of the best offenses in baseball to one run on just one hit!

Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Ryan Mountcastle.

Cleveland scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Bryan Rocchio walked with bases loaded, and Austin Hedges hit a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Josh Naylor doubled to score Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez as Cleveland’s lead grew to 4-1.

The Guardians doubled their score again in the sixth inning. Hedges started the scoring with a single to bring home Andres Gimenez.

Cleveland got another bases-loaded walk (Kwan) and a two-run sacrifice fly (Ramirez) to go up 8-1. So the Guardians scored five of their eight runs without even getting a hit.

Wait … a two-run sacrifice fly?

Rocchio scored from third, but after Kwan got caught in a rundown, Hedges came around to score from second. Kwan managed to elude the Orioles defenders and he was safe at first, too.

Baltimore rallied for three runs off Scott Barlow in seventh to cut the lead in half, but the rest of the bullpen put out the fire.

SATURDAY SLAM

While 70,000 wrestling fans pour into Cleveland Browns Stadium for SummerSlam, baseball nuts will be headed toward the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.

Joey Cantillo will get his second start for the Guardians, while Baltimore will counter with Zach Eflin (6-7). First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
