Oops! All Homers: Cleveland Guardians Win Long-Ball Battle with Toronto Blue Jays

What if they changed the rules of baseball and you could only score on a home run?

The game would look a lot like the Cleveland Guardians’ 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon.

Cleveland’s home runs were more frequent and had more runners on base. That made all the difference.

FIREWORKS DISPLAY

Toronto’s Davis Schneider started the long-ball parade with a solo homer in the second inning.

Guardians catcher Bo Naylor slammed a 435-foot shot to center field in the bottom of the inning. Will Brennan was on base, so Cleveland went up 2-1.

Blue Jays leadoff hitter Isiah Kiner-Falefa tied the game with a solo homer in the third, but again, the Guardians’ responded with a two-run shot.

Jose Ramirez did the honors, as he improved his power numbers to 19 homers and 67 RBI.

Steven Kwan went 2-for-4 to improve his batting average to .390. His solo homer in the fifth put Cleveland up 5-2.

Daniel Schneemann added a solo shot in the sixth to complete the Guardians’ scoring.

Kiner-Falefa hit another solo homer, his sixth of the year, but the Blue Jays couldn’t get any closer.

ON THE MOUND

Guardians starter Ben Lively improved his record to 7-3 with a 3.03 ERA. His ability to put up Shane Bieber-like numbers has been one secret to the team’s success this year.

Emmanuel Clase shut down Toronto in the ninth for his 23rd save.

Cleveland has won four games in a row and will go for the sweep at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday. Triston McKenzie (3-4) will start for the Guardians against Yusei Kikuchi (4-6).
