Motown Blues: Cleveland Guardians Drop Three of Four in Detroit

Catcher Austin Hedges pitched two innings, so you know it wasn’t a good afternoon for the Cleveland Guardians.

The Detroit Tigers routed the Guardians 10-1 on Thursday afternoon for their third win in the four-game series.

Spencer Howard (1-2) made his debut in the Cleveland starting rotation. In three innings, he gave up seven hits and four runs.

Relievers Pedro Avila and Nick Sandlin gave up six more runs over the next three innings.

Ironically, Hedges was the Guardians’ most successful pitcher. He only walked one batter and didn’t give up a hit in two innings.

NEED SOME OFFENSE

Cleveland only managed three hits against Jack Flaherty (6-5) and two Tigers relievers.

Bo Naylor provided Cleveland’s only run with his sixth home run of the year in the third inning.

Minnesota is creeping up on the Guardians in the American League Central Division standings. The Twins are only 4.5 games out of first place.

The Guardians (57-35) will try to right the ship tonight when they visit the Tampa Bay Rays.

Carlos Carrasco (3-6, 5.22 ERA) will get the start against Taj Bradley (3-4, 3.23 ERA) at 6:50 p.m. on AppleTV+.
