Logan Allen Strikes Out 9 as Cleveland Guardians Hold Off San Francisco Giants 5-4

Logan Allen hasn’t had the best year, but he usually does enough to help the Cleveland Guardians win.

Allen didn’t even get the win on Saturday, but he struck out nine San Francisco Giants in less than five innings as Cleveland prevailed 5-4.

The Giants surged back from a 4-0 deficit before the Cleveland bullpen (Sam Hentges, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase) finally shut them down.

BUILDING THE LEAD

Cleveland loaded the bases in the first before scoring runs in unspectacular ways.

Josh Naylor grounded out to score Steven Kwan, and then Jhonkensy Noel’s sacrifice fly brought home Angel Martinez.

Tyler Freeman singled in Jose Ramirez, and the Guardians had a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Kwan smashed a solo home run to center field in the second inning, and the Guardians appeared to be on their way to an easy victory.

However, the Giants woke up in the fifth and scored three runs. Tyler Fitzgerald singled to score Jorge Soler and Heliot Ramos.

San Francisco then pulled off a double steal. Fitzgerald broke for second, and when Bo Naylor tried to catch him, Matt Chapman stole home.

In the sixth, Noel increased Cleveland’s lead to 5-3 with the third home run of his brief Cleveland tenure.

That was an important insurance run, because the Giants cut the lead to 5-4 in the seventh on an RBI double by Michael Conforto.

Cleveland reliever Pedro Avila (3-1) got the win, while Clase collected his 26th save.

RUBBER MATCH

The Guardians (55-23) will look for another series victory today at 1:40 p.m. Carlos Carrasco (3-6) will take the ball for Cleveland against Hayden Birdsong (1-0).
