Jeimer Candelario Hits Two Homers as Cleveland Guardians Lose 4-2 to Cincinnati Reds

Tanner Bibee dominated Cincinnati hitters for five innings … except for the one guy who had his number.

Jeimer Candelario bashed two home runs off Bibee to spoil an otherwise outstanding performance as the Reds beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 on Wednesday night.

The Reds third baseman opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. His teammates had no success against Bibee, who ranked up 11 strikeouts in just over five innings.

Cleveland tied the score in third when Reds starter Nick Lodolo (7-2) walked David Fry with the bases loaded.

Andres Gimenez put the Guardians on top 2-1 in the fifth inning with a groundout that scored Jose Ramirez.

THE TURNING POINT

At this point, Bibee was cruising along with a one-hitter. But disaster struck in the sixth.

Will Benson (who played for the Guardians in 2022) and TJ Friedl singled, and then Candelario hammered the ball down the right field line and over the fence.

Bibee (4-2) turned the game over to Nick Sandlin, who was followed by Tim Herrin and Scott Barlow. They didn’t allow any more runs, but the Guardians were unable to stage one of their patented comebacks.

Kansas City lost, so Cleveland maintained its 5½-game lead in the American League Central Division.

The Guardians have another day off (not at the beach this time) before starting a three-game series in Toronto on Friday night.

Logan Allen (6-3) is scheduled to start for Cleveland against Kevin Gausman (5-4).
