Cleveland Guardians Win Round 1 in Battle of Baseball’s Best

When the best team in baseball makes a mistake, you have to take advantage.

The Cleveland Guardians did that in a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies last night at Citizens Bank Park.

Angel Martinez got caught in a rundown in the first inning, but when Bryce Harper threw the ball to second base, nobody was there!

David Fry singled to score Martinez to put Cleveland on top 1-0.

In the fourth, the Phillies caught Andres Gimenez off base but were unable to throw him out, either.

Gimenez later scored on a squeeze bunt by Bo Naylor. Later in the fourth, Martinez singled to score Rocchio to put the Guardians on top 3-0.

A LIVELY BUNCH

Meanwhile, Ben Lively (9-6) was doing a masterful job of controlling the Phillies lineup, which featured four All-Stars. He pitched six innings and gave up three hits while striking out six.

Bryson Stott, the Phillies’ No. 8 hitter, bashed a solo homer in the fifth to put his team on the board.

However, Lively and the Cleveland bullpen allowed no further damage. Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase handled the last three innings for the best bullpen in baseball.

Clase has 32 saves and a 0.74 ERA, but you can’t sleep on Smith (2.06 ERA) and Gaddis (1.10 ERA). It’s like having three closers in a row!

Carlos Carrasco (3-8) will take the mound tonight for Game 2 of the series against the Phillies’ Tyler Phillips (2-0). Game time is 6:05.
