Cleveland Guardians Snap Longest Losing Streak of the Season

Cleveland Guardians fans can breathe easily again now that the team’s seven-game losing streak has finally ended.

Last night’s 2-1 victory in Minnesota wasn’t the best game of the year, especially on offense.

But Cleveland’s pitching carried the day in a game in which each team managed only four hits.

Gavin Williams (2-4) delivered his best performance of the season for the Guardians, giving up just one run in six innings.

Cleveland then unleashed the three-headed bullpen monster, which protected the 2-1 lead down the stretch.

Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase shut down the Twins with a scoreless inning each. Clase earned his 34th save.

STAR OF THE SHOW

Steven Kwan opened the game with a solo home run. Cleveland’s early lead was a refreshing change after the last two doubleheader losses.

Kwan also made a brilliant play in left field in the third inning. With two runners on and no outs, Willi Castro hit what looked like a bloop single to left.

However, Kwan tricked the runner at second base, Ryan Jeffers, into thinking he had a chance to catch the ball. Jeffers hesitated, and when the ball dropped in, Kwan picked it up and threw Jeffers out at third.

Instead of facing the bases loaded with no outs, Williams got the next two Twins to ground out to escape the inning.

Bo Naylor was the other hero for Cleveland, hitting his ninth home run down the right-field line to put Cleveland up 2-0.

Minnesota’s only run came in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Matt Wallner.

Cleveland’s win provided a little breathing room in the AL Central race going into today’s series finale. The Guardians lead the Twins by 2½ games and the Kansas City Royals by 3½ games.

Tanner Bibee (9-4) will return from a brief injury layoff to start for Cleveland against the Twins’ David Festa (2-2). First pitch is set for 2:10 p.m.
