Cleveland Guardians’ Shoe on the Other Foot in 7-0 Loss

Winning 7-0 was a lot of fun on Friday, but the Cleveland Guardians were on the wrong end of that score last night against the San Diego Padres.

Dylan Cease turned in a dominant performance on the mound for San Diego, giving up just one hit in seven innings.

Cease improved his record to 9-8, as he walked one batter and struck out 10.

Tyler Freeman’s triple in the third inning was Cleveland’s only hit.

Cleveland had a chance to break the scoreless tie, but Bo Naylor struck out and Steven Kwan flied out to left to end the inning.

PITCHING WOES

Cleveland starter Gavin Williams (0-2) was matching Cease with zeroes on the scoreboard, but everything fell apart in the fourth inning after San Diego loaded the bases.

Williams gave up an RBI single to Luis Campusano to put San Diego on the scoreboard. With the bases still loaded, Williams walked Luis Arraez and hit Jake Cronenworth with a pitch.

The Padres held onto the 3-0 lead until the eighth inning, when they tacked on four more runs off Spencer Howard.

David Peralta hit a solo homer. Campusano added an RBI single before scoring on a two-run bomb by Cronenworth.

At least the sellout crowd at Progressive Field got free Bo Naylor jerseys.

The rubber match of the three-game series is set for today at 1:40 p.m. Ben Lively (8-5) will take the mound for the Guardians against the Padres’ Michael King (7-6).
