Cleveland Guardians Rally Falls Short in 7-6 Loss to Toronto Blue Jays
The Cleveland Guardians will welcome Jose Ramirez back from the paternity list on Tuesday night against Seattle. Without him, they lost on Saturday and Sunday in Toronto.
Cleveland lost 5-0 on Saturday but put up a much better fight on Sunday, falling short to the Blue Jays by a 7-6 score.
Ben Lively (6-3) had a rare bad outing on the mound for the Guardians. He gave up a two-run homer to Ernie Clement in the second inning.
Cleveland tied the score in the top of the fifth. Steven Kwan singled to score Daniel Schneemann.
Kwan went 4-for-5 and raised his batting average to .398. He has reached base in 22 straight games.
Freeman then grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to score Brayan Rocchio.
“No RBI for you!”
However, Toronto exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, powered by a grand slam from Daulton Varsho.
This is a good time to note the number of second-generation players on the Blue Jays. In addition to Varsho (Gary), Toronto has Bo Bichette (Dante) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Vlad Sr.). The Jays had Cavan Biggio (Craig), but they traded him to the Dodgers last week.
NEVER GIVE UP
The Guardians, as usual, didn’t go down without a fight. Trailing 7-2, they came back with two-run homers from Scheemann in the sixth and Rocchio in the ninth.
Cleveland got the tying run to third base, but Toronto reliever Nate Pearson retired Andres Gimenez on a great catch by center fielder Kevin Kiermaier to end the game.
When the Guardians return to Progressive Field on Tuesday night, Triston McKenzie (3-3) will get the start. Seattle hasn’t announced a starter yet.
