Cleveland Guardians Pile Up Insurance Runs in 7-0 Victory

Progressive Insurance sponsors the Cleveland Guardians’ stadium. Last night, the team scored enough insurance runs for Allstate, Geico, and Nationwide as well.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead over the San Deigo Padres in the eighth inning, the Guardians sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times to put the game out of reach.

Bo Naylor started the fun by smashing the ball right back at pitcher Stephen Kolek for an infield single. Steven Kwan singled, and Angel Martinez bunted for a hit to load the bases.

As usual, Jose Ramirez came through with a two-run single to put Cleveland ahead 3-0.

Reliever Austin Davis reloaded the bases by hitting Josh Naylor in the elbow with a pitch. David Fry, who was 3-for-3, walked to force in Martinez and put Cleveland up 4-0.

One out later, pinch-hitter Brayan Rocchio delivered a two-run single off the third pitcher of the inning, Sean Reynolds, to increase the lead to 6-0.

Emmanuel Clase, who had been warming up in the bullpen for the save, sat back down.

Another pinch-hitter, Tyler Freeman, finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Fry.

HE’S OUR ACE

Tanner Bibee pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to improve his record to 8-4. He gave up two hits and three walks while striking out three.

That’s impressive, considering the Padres lineup features three All-Stars (Luis Arraez, Jurickson Profar, Jackson Merrill).

Cleveland’s bullpen kept San Diego scoreless for the rest of the way, thanks to Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Nick Sandlin.

The series will continue on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. Gavin Williams (0-1) will start for Cleveland, while Dylan Cease (8-8) will pitch for San Diego.
