Cleveland Guardians Bash Three Homers to Break Losing Streak

The long ball is back in Cleveland.

The Cleveland Guardians used three home runs to break a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Steven Kwan started the party in the third inning with a solo homer to right field.  After hitting six homers last year, Kwan has already hit 10 this year.

Detroit jumped into the lead in the fourth on a two-run homer by Wenceel Perez off Guardians starter Xzavion Curry.

Cleveland tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when young slugger Jhonkensy Noel hit a towering drive down the left-field line.

“Big Christmas” already has five homers in his first 43 major-league at-bats. Like Angel Martinez, he is here in Cleveland to stay.

Jose Ramirez put the Guardians in the lead for good with a solo homer in the fifth inning, his 24th of the year.

Cleveland increased the lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Martinez and an RBI single by Ramirez.

DON’T CELEBRATE YET

Detroit refused to go away, cutting the lead to 5-4 in the seventh inning. Jake Rogers hit a sacrifice fly, and Zach McKinstry scored on a pickoff error by Cleveland pitcher Hunter Gaddis.

Fortunately, the Guardians bullpen finished the job, as Emmanuel Clase picked up his 30th save.

Cade Smith (5-1) got the win in relief of Curry. He retired all five batters he faced, three on strikeouts.

Cleveland has a neat record of 60-40. Minnesota and Kansas City both lost, so the Guardians increased their lead over both teams in the AL Central Division to five games.

The series will continue tonight at 6:40 p.m. Jack Flaherty (7-5, 3.13 ERA) will try to dominate the Guardians like he did in Detroit. Cleveland will counter with Tanner Bibee (8-4, 3.58).
