Blue Jays Sign Jeff Hoffman To Three-Year Deal

The Jays get another one! to add to their bullpen Toronto signs 32 year-old reliever Jeff Hoffman to a three-year $33 million contract. Hoffman had a great season last year, boasting a 2.17 ERA across 66 IP, and had a career year for strikeouts with 89. Hoffman also made his first all-star team last year as a member of the Phillies, and made a trip to the postseason after helping Philly win the NL East. The Blue Jays initially drafted Hoffman with the ninth overall pick in 2014, but was traded away just a year later in the trade that brought Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto and sent Hoffman to Colorado.

Although the main weak point for the Jays at this point is clearly hitting, and the free agent fans want to see the most is by far Anthony Santander, Hoffman is a good pick up and will be quite the addition to Toronto’s bullpen which I’ve previously said also needed much work. Along with the previous guys Toronto has brought in this off season for the pen including Yimi Garcia and Nick Sandlin, Hoffman is reliable to get through the best part of any lineup in baseball and get his team out of a jam in the late innings of a ballgame.

Jays fans should expect Hoffman to either be the new everyday closer over Garcia, or have him be the set up guy in the seventh or eighth innings. Toronto will try to continue landing key free agents still on the market, but Hoffman coming home is certainly one to smile about.
