MLB Playoffs: Preview & Predictions For NL Wild Card Round

The NL Wild Card series will begin on Tuesday afternoon and will come to an end on Thursday.

The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves split a Monday doubleheader to clinch a wild card spot. The Arizona Diamondbacks were eliminated with the result and we march on.

Below, take a quick look at both Wild Card series this week.

6-New York Mets at 3-Milwaukee Brewers

The Mets won what could be the Game of the Year on Monday when Francisco Lindor launched a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to secure an 8-7 victory. New York will now go to Milwaukee, where it played over the weekend and has not had great success.

The Brewers defeated the Mets five out of six times this season. After seeing Craig Counsell to go Chicago, the Brewers remained at the top of the NL Central division. Christian Yelich is out for the season but the bullpen was the catalyst for this team. Devin Williams emerged as one of the best closers in baseball while Trevor Megill is an elite setup man. As for the rotation, it does not strike fear, much like the Mets. There are many similarities between these two teams but the Brewers have had the Mets number recently.

The Mets have been the best team in baseball since June 1. New York was 11 games under .500 in May before finishing the season 65-38. Lindor turned into an MVP candidate while the starting rotation stepped up in a big way, led by Sean Manaea.

This has a chance to be an extremely exciting series but the Mets are at a disadvantage having played a doubleheader on Monday afternoon.

Prediction: Brewers win series 2-1

5-San Diego Padres at 4-Atlanta Braves

The unstoppable force vs. the immovable object.

The Atlanta Braves are a team that cannot be taken down. They lose Ronald Acuna and Spencer Strider for the season early. Austin Riley goes down with an injury. Ozzie Albies was gone for two months before returning and the Braves kept their heads above water and earned a wild card spot. Now, Atlanta will go to San Diego, who was as good as anyone over the final two months of the season.

Will Atlanta have Chris Sale? He was scratched late on Monday with back spasms and might miss the series this week. Spencer Schwellenbach pitched on Monday and this means he will likely not be available until the Divisional Series. The Braves have plenty of experience in the postseason. This is now seven consecutive years that Atlanta has been featured in the postseason.

The Padres have gone for it in recent years. This includes adding Manny Machado and Juan Soto. San Diego also traded Soto and signed Fernando Tatis Jr. to a long-term deal. San Diego is a franchise that has wanted to win and it led to an appearance in the NLCS two years ago. Right now, the Padres look poised to make another run this year.

Prediction: Padres win series 2-1
