MLB Playoffs: National League Division Series Preview & Predictions

The National League Division Series are officially set.

The New York Mets, coming off a miracle victory in the Wild Card round, will take on the top-seeded Philadelphia Phillies in an NL East matchup. There will be another division matchup as NL West foes will meet in the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.

How will all of the action play out this weekend?

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies

It has been a week like we have never seen from the New York Mets.

After Hurricane Helene postponed two games in Atlanta, the Mets went back on Monday for a double-header before the Wild Card round began on Tuesday afternoon. Francisco Lindor hit a ninth-inning home run to send the Mets to the postseason. On Thursday night against one of the best closers in baseball Devin Williams, Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead three-run home run and the Mets advance.

While all of this is happening, The Philadelphia Phillies are getting rest and enjoying the bye week as the top seed in the National League.

Game 1 will take place at Citizens Bank on Saturday afternoon. Cy Young contender Zack Wheeler will take the ball for the Phillies against likely Tylor Megill for the Mets. The pitching rotation for New York has not been finalized just yet. During the regular season, Philadelphia won the season series 6-7 and will be favorites to advance.

This is the first time in history that the Mets and Phillies will play in the postseason. There is star power on each side and both stadiums will be shaking from the opening moments of each game.

The pitching edge goes to Philly and it begins on Saturday. Wheeler has had one of the great seasons in baseball this year before Aaron Nola on deck. The Mets have been carried by Lindor and Brandon Nimmo this season and have plenty of experience in a deep lineup.

This will be a must-watch series from start to finish between two division foes looking to advance to the NLCS. In the end, the Phillies might be too deep, both in the rotation and lineup, here.

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

The San Diego Padres have been one of the hottest teams in baseball for three months now. San Diego ran away with the first Wild Card spot and swept the Atlanta Braves over the first two days of the postseason.

Now, the Padres will visit a team that it knows quite well — the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are looking for revenge after being knocked out two years ago by San Diego. And it will not be easy.

The Padres are riding high. Fernando Tatis Jr. got the Wild Card round jumpstarted with a monster home run in the first inning. Luis Arraez has been a spark at the top of the lineup while Jackson Merrill has emerged as a young star in his rookie year. The lineup is deep and Dylan Cease leads a talented rotation.

Of course, the Dodgers have some of the best starpower in baseball. Shohei Ohtani created the 50-50 club and is the runaway NL MVP this season. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman give the Dodgers MVL presences at the top. The rotation has question marks led by Jack Flaherty and the impact of Yoshinobu Yamamoto returning from injury. The Dodgers have also struggled to get through in the postseason in recent years.

This is another exciting series that feels like it’s going to go the distance. Right now, the Padres are the hotter team and seem to have all the momentum.

Prediction: Padres win series 3-2
