MLB Awards Finalists Include Cleveland Guardians’ Stephen Vogt, Emmanuel Clase
A relief pitcher hasn’t won the Cy Young Award in 40 years. That could change soon.
Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase had an amazing season, saving 47 games and posting a 0.61 ERA.
He reached the finals of the American League Cy Young Award voting, along with the Royals’ Seth Lugo and the Tigers’ Tarik Skubal.
Clase will try to join Willie Hernandez of the 1984 Detroit Tigers in the history books.
The National League Cy Young finalists are Chris Sale of Atlanta, Zack Wheeler of Philadelphia, and Paul Skenes of Pittsburgh.
Winners will be named on Nov. 20.
The Guardians also have Stephen Vogt in the finals for Manager of the Year. Like Clase, he is facing competition from the Royals (Matt Quatraro) and Tigers (A.J. Hinch).
The National League finalists are Pat Murphy of the Brewers, Carlos Mendoza of the Mets, and Mike Shildt of the Padres.
This award will be presented on Nov. 19.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Awards season will begin one day earlier with the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award.
The AL contenders are Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil, Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser, and Yankees catcher Austin Wells.
In the National League, the finalists are Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill, Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio, and Skenes, who seems to be the favorite.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Two of the three American League contenders can be found in the Yankees’ outfield, as Aaron Judge and Juan Soto powered the Bronx Bombers to the World Series. Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is the other finalist.
In the National League, the MVP finalists are Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, and Diamondbacks second basemen Ketel Marte.
The winner will be announced on Nov. 20.
