MLB Awards: Early NL Cy Young Award Favorites
The 2024 MLB season is entering the summer months as the calendar turns to June. This means teams and players alike have solidified their spots moving forward.
The starting pitching around the league has been elite once again and many pitchers have been performing at the top of their game.
Below, check out the top Cy Young favorites in the National League.
3. Ranger Suarez, Philadelphia Phillies
Ranger Suarez has been one of the most effective pitchers in baseball for a Philadelphia Phillies team that has not lost many games this season. Suarez is 9-1 with a league-leading 1.70 ERA. He has allowed an incredible 43 hits in 74 innings while striking out 79 and walking 16. Suarez also leads the MLB with a .797 WHIP.
The Phillies have emerged as early-season contenders in the National League after back-to-back appearances in the NLSC. Suarez taking the next step can be a major factor as the Phillies look to win a World Series.
2. Shota Imanaga, Chicago Cubs
All of the offseason hype was surrounding Yoshinobu Yamamoto but it is another Japanese league pitcher that is taking the National League by storm early on.
Shota Imanaga is looking like a bargain for the Chicago Cubs early in his career. He is currently 5-1 with a 1.86 ERA through 10 starts. Imanaga is not a major strikeout pitcher, averaging just over one per inning in 58 innings, but gets plenty of soft contact. He has allowed 48 hits with 10 walks.
1. Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies
It is no surprise that the Phillies are where they are this season with two Cy Young contenders at the top of the rotation. Zack Wheeler signed a major contract extension this offseason and is making it stand up.
Wheeler is 6-3 this season with a 2.32 ERA. The power pitcher has struck out 85 in 73.2 innings while allowing 47 hits. Wheeler has been near the top of the league since signing with the Phillies and is improving each year.
