MLB Awards: Early AL Cy Young Award Favorites
The 2024 MLB season is entering the summer months as the calendar turns to June. This means teams and players alike have solidified their spots moving forward.
The starting pitching around the league has been elite once again and many pitchers have been performing at the top of their game.
Below, check out the top Cy Young favorites in the American League.
3. Tanner Houck, Boston Red Sox
There have been many pitchers emerge around the league this season and Tanner Houck is near the top of the list. We have learned that wins and losses are not taken into account when deciding the Cy Young winner, which is the right choice, and Houck is the perfect example.
Houck has a record of 5-5 playing for the Boston Red Sox, who have been living around .500 this season. Houck is pitching to a 1.85 ERA with a complete-game shutout under his belt. He has not been a big strikeout pitcher, just 75 in 78 innings, but Houck has allowed 60 hits and just one home run this season.
2. Corbin Burnes, Baltimore OriolesÂ
One major splash during the offseason came when the Baltimore Orioles acquired ace Corbin Burnes, somewhat out of nowhere. Despite a new home, Burnes has thrived once again in the American League.
Burnes has compiled a record of 5-2 with an ERA of 2.35. He has totaled 72.2 innings, allowing 56 hits and six homes runs while striking out 71. Burnes continues to be one of the best pitchers in the game and will be looking for a new contract this offseason. Whether that is with Baltimore or another team around the league, he will be compensated like a true ace.
1. Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers
Tarik Skubal has been one of the pleasant surprises around the league and is currently the favorite to win the AL Cy Young award. The Detroit Tigers have been fighting to remain around .500 this season but know they have a win every fifth day with Skubal on the mound.
Skubal is currently 7-1 with a 2.01 ERA. He has struck out 80 battles in 67 innings while allowing 44 hits. Skubal is logging 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings. He has improved each year of his career and is taking it to another level at 27 years old.
