MLB announces changes in uniforms for All-Star Game and regular season

After introducing controversial changes to uniforms in 2024, Major League Baseball announced on Monday they would be introducing new changes to uniforms beginning in 2025 as reported by MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince.

The first change involves adjusting overall home and road team uniforms, including pant customization, increasing the sizing of the lettering and returning to previously used materials that the players requested. The second notable change is that players will revert to wearing their own team uniforms in the All-Star Game.

The uniforms used in 2024 were less than popular. In an effort to improve on-field performance, MLB, along with uniform sponsor Nike, introduced the new Nike Vapor Premier jersey design to improve mobility and fit. Nike, who sourced production to Fanatics, also made adjustments to lettering which resulted in smaller names and numbers, and also turned to heat pressing for patches and lettering. Additionally, pants were limited to a few sizes with little to no customization available to players.

The uniforms were not received well by the general public or players with many claiming that the uniforms felt cheaply made while the pants looked to be transparent. There was also a matter that their moisture-wicking abilities were missing as players often appeared drenched in sweat. Issues concerning supply and wrongful colorization of certain uniforms all fed into the uniform debacle.

MLB worked with Nike and Fanatics to institute slight adjustments during the regular season but committed to making full adjustments in 2025. After receiving plenty of feedback, all parties set about addressing the players’ requests for enlarged letters for player names, embroidered sleeve patches and reverting back to full pant customization. There will be some delays in production that prevent all changes from being immediate in 2025 but previous material from 2023 will be widely used to implement all changes by 2026.

The announcement concerning the All-Star Game uniforms is sure to be a welcome one for fans across the league. After 2019, MLB announced that players would wear a singular All-Star Game uniform for the American League and National League teams. The move was not generally popular as players had worn their “hometown” jerseys since the 1930s. One of the main criticisms of the decision was that the uniforms themselves weren’t the best looking in action, and the point of the All-Star Game was lost in translation. It became difficult to know what player was from what team without being able to identify their jersey.

Players will once again don their primary home and away uniforms for the 2025 All-Star Game in Atlanta. The All-Star uniforms themselves will be worn during the workout day and Home Run Derby, with participants in the Derby wearing their own primary home uniform.
