Milwaukee Brewers’ Sweep Tightens Cleveland Guardians’ First-Place Status

Most lost weekends in Milwaukee involve drinking too much beer.

The Cleveland Guardians finished a weekend of punchless offense with a 2-0 loss yesterday at American Family Field.

Steven Kwan and Will Brennan hit singles with two outs in the sixth inning. That’s it. Nobody even drew a walk!

So that means Colin Rea (11-4) pitched a no-hitter for the first 5 2/3 innings.

The Guardians’ Ben Lively (10-8) only gave up two runs on five hits in six innings. Like Tanner Bibee one day earlier, Lively’s hard work went to waste.

The Brewers scored on a single by Willy Adames in the first inning and a groundout by Eric Haase in the second. Haase was a backup catcher for the Guardians last year and for the Indians in 2018-19.

Before the game, the Brewers honored Hall of Famer Robin Yount on the 50th anniversary of his major-league debut.

THREE-TEAM DOGFIGHT

After scoring four runs all weekend, the Guardians’ lead in the AL Central is only two games over the Minnesota Twins and three over the Kansas City Royals.

Cleveland will have Monday off but will stay on the road and face the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

The Guardians will need to muster a better offensive effort to counter the Bronx Bombers. led by Triple Crown contender Aaron Judge (.331, 44 HR, 111 RBI).

Matthew Boyd will look for this first win in a Guardians’ uniform against the Yankees’ Luis Gil (12-6).
