Mavericks Trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers
12:00AM on Sunday, February 2nd, 2025 will go down in history as the day that the biggest trade in sports history was made.
The Dallas Mavericks trade All-Star guard Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers, in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 1st round pick. The Utah Jazz were the third team involved and they collected a player and a couple second round picks for their services.
Last season, the Dallas Mavericks went to the NBA Finals. They defeated the LA Clippers in six games, they defeated the OKC Thunder in seven games, and they defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games to reach the NBA Finals in their first year with Luka Doncic.
Luka Doncic is one of the best players in the entire NBA. He is a point scorer, a playmaker, and one of the most popular players in the league. When Dallas traded for his rights back in 2018, they traded for their future. They traded for their next Dirk Nowitzki. Since Luka’s debut, Mavericks fans have loved him. He was the energetic, young kid on a Mavs squad that was not too bright. Slowly but surely, that team grew and management put together a team around him that could win, and they almost did just that in 2024.
The timing of this is just absolutely shocking. Luka Doncic was supposed to return from an injury within the next week or two, but the Mavericks decided to move on from him and send him to the Lakers for a 31-year-old Anthony Davis who has had a long list of injuries in his career. Oh, and also only one first round pick. If healthy, Irving and Davis could be a fun duo, but the reality is this move was just unbelievable.
Reports circle X that claim the Mavericks had concerns regarding Luka’s conditioning, and his desire to sign a supermax extension with the Mavericks once his current deal is up.
As a Mavericks fan, this hurts. Seeing the guy that I thought was the future of the franchise traded away in a deal that just shortens the competitive window for this team, is absolutely insane. Nico Harrison and company have a lot of work to do to regain the trust of Mavericks fans, and they have a long way to go if they want to make another deep run in the NBA Playoffs.
Having to look at the positive side, Anthony Davis brings a big (literally) presence to a Mavericks team that has lacked a true big man since Dirk Nowitzki retired. Finally, they acquire (at what cost) a strong, defensive big man who should pair up nicely with Kyrie Irving.
Nonetheless, the Mavericks are still looking to win a championship. They believe that this trade increases their chances in doing so. We will see if they have anything else up their sleeves. But for now, this is where we’re at. This is unbelievable. What a time to be a sports fan.
