Matt Eberflus To The Cowboys May Actually Be A Good Move?
As a Chicago Bears fan, I can tell you right now that I hate Matt Eberflus with a burning pasion. I do, I hate him so much. He is, WITHOUT QUESTION, one of the worst Head Coaches that this team has had in recent memory. Not only that; he should’ve CERTAINLY been fired before the start of the 2024 season, so he didn’t have a chance to even SPEAK to Caleb Williams in his rookie year.
(That last part is neither here nor there. That’s just me!)
He was NOT a good head coach. BUT…..he has been a good defensive coordinator. Whether it was with the Colts, or the times he was calling the plays for Chicago; this man had the uncanny ability to elevate his defenses to a whole new level. That is why when I saw the news about him and the Cowboys.
Former #Bears coach Matt Eberflus is headed to Dallas today for an interview, and as long as all goes well, he’s expected to be named the #Cowboys defensive coordinator, per sources.
A big hire for new coach Brian Schottenheimer that should be finalized soon. pic.twitter.com/SzPnV07Lkp

My first reaction was; “huh……this might actually work out for ol’ Jerry Jones.”
The Cowboys, for those of you who haven’t been paying attention, just hired former OC Brian Schottenheimer to be the new Head Coach of the team. This comes about a week or so after the team let go of former HC Mike McCarthy, after he and the team came to an impasse over a new contract.
Schottenheimer, a first year HC after fourteen years of being a coordinator, will be attempting to pick up right where McCarthy left off with this team. He will be getting 3x Pro Bowl QB Dak Prescott back under center, to go along with his All-Pro wideout Ceedee Lamb, who just signed a FAT 4-year, $136,000,000 extension to stay in Dallas.
This is a big year for Schottenheimer, who people are already touting as a “joke” before he even steps foot onto the field. So because of that, he needs someone trustworthy as his DC. He needs someone to take the reigns of a defense that was near the TOP of the league between 2021 and 2023, and what better person to do that…..than Matt Eberflus.
(I can’t believe I just typed that without vomiting.)
The Bears under Eberflus’ tutelage…..they had one of the better defenses in the league over the past number of years. They were a force to be reckoned with, ranking in the top-10 in multiple defensive categories tin he previous three seasons. If anything, if Eberflus actually finished off 2024 with Chicago……one could say that they would’ve ended the season ranked higher than they actually did.
He is a GREAT COORDINATOR! He’s not a great coach, don’t get that twisted. I don’t need the city of Chicago chasing me down Lake Shore Dr. with pitch forks and torches, calling for my head. But to say that he doesn’t know what he’s doing when it comes to STRICTLY managing a defense, just doesn’t make sense to me.
If you add all of the extra stuff that came with being a Head Coach, then sure……he’s going to look like a mesh back filled with mango pulp out there. But if this man can strictly focus on calling plays on the defense…..I think he can be a real game changer for the Cowboys. I think he can bring this unit back to a place where they haven’t been since the Dan Quinn days. But it’s just going to take a little time to get there.
Does this mean I want the Cowboys to be good, or that I’m “rooting for them?” Absolutely not! I pray for this team’s downfall every single day, just like every other football fan who’s located outside the state of Texas. HOWEVER, what I am saying is that IF they bring in Flus…..the Dallas Cowboys might be a PROBLEM come September.
But you know what? What do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
