Mariners Make Deadline’s First Splash, Land Randy Arozarena

The struggling Seattle Mariners have needed some sort of shot in the arm for a solid minute now.

Seattle has lost eight of its last nine games and has been struggling to put anything together offensively.

However, they may have just found the solution to those issues late Thursday night.

Consider the MLB Trade Deadline season officially kicked off after the Mariners acquired Rays star outfielder Randy Arozarena after midnight on the East Coast.

Minor leaguers Aidan Smith and Brody Hopkins as well as a player to be named later are heading back to Tampa Bay to complete the deal.

Arozarena is slashing just .211/.318/.394 with 15 home runs and 37 RBI this season but a change of scenery could be just what the doctor ordered for the former Rookie of the Year.

“Randy is a dynamic, high-energy all-around player who has excelled in the biggest moments on the biggest stages,” Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said. “He’s going to be a great addition to our clubhouse and lineup.”

It’s likely that Arozarena will slide into left field for a Mariners lineup that has an OPS of just .600 this season, the third-lowest in all of baseball.

Seattle jumped out to a huge AL West division lead early in the season and even inflated it to ten games at one point.

However, since then things have not been as smooth sailing.

The Mariners have seen their lead in the West disappear as Seattle now sits a game back of the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West and just 1.5 games ahead of the red-hot Texas Rangers who have won five games in a row.

Once again, it’s looking like the AL West is going to be a three-team race that comes down to the very end, and five days before the trade deadline, it just added another star.
