Mariners JP Crawford Headed For IL After Fractured Pinky

The Seattle Mariners are struggling right now.

After building a huge lead in the AL West for much of the season, Seattle has lost six of their last seven games and is seeing their once-dominant division lead fade away.

Seattle is now tied with Houston at the top of the AL West after the Astros’ nearly two-month-long tear. Not only are the reigning AL West champs hot on the Mariners’ tail, but the defending world champion Texas Rangers now sit just four games back after winning nine of their last thirteen.

In addition to the struggles on the field, the Mariners have experienced a spill of unfortunate injuries to some key players.

One day after superstar Julio Rodriguez left Sunday’s game against Houston with an ankle injury, Seattle looks to be without its starting shortstop for a little while.

J.P Crawford will likely be heading to the IL after being hit on the hand in the first inning of the Mariners’ 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.

Crawford was hit by an 86 MPH changeup from Angles starter Tyler Anderson but proceeded to run the bases, scoring the Mariners’ lone run of the night before being lifted in the second inning.

Following the game, Mariners manager Scott Service announced that Crawford had suffered a hairline fracture on his right pinky finger.

“There’s a little hairline fracture there,” Servais said. “We’ll know more once a specialist looks at it and go from there.”

It won’t be the first time that Seattle has had to place J.P Crawford on the IL this season. The Mariners shortstop missed nearly a month with an oblique strain earlier this season.

“Adversity hits at different times, and we’re looking at it right now,” Servais said. “We’ll find out a lot about our club and any guys that step up. J.P. was out earlier in the season for a while. We had guys step up, and that’s what we’re going to need guys to do right now.”
