Maple Leafs Trade Timothy Liljegren to the San Jose Sharks

On the eve of Halloween, the Maple Leafs trade defender Timothy Liljegren to the San Jose Sharks, in exchange for a conditional 3rd in 2025, 5th in 2026, and defender Matt Benning.

Liljegren recently penned a 2-year, $6M contract in June of 2024. Liljegren unfortunately found himself outside of the Leafs lineup for most of the year, as his time in Toronto was coming to a close.

Benning is a 30-year old defender, who doesn’t find much ice time in San Jose, who as well is known to have some injury troubles. Benning would likely find himself suiting up for the Marlies, and occasionally playing for the Leafs if injury troubles are plaguing the Leafs.

Toronto will recieve the better of San Jose’s two third-round picks, which were originally Edmonton’s, and Colorado’s.
