Maple Leafs Sign G Joseph Woll to a 3-yr Extension

Among all the rumours surrounding Mitch Marner, Max Domi, and Tyler Bertuzzi, one player that was in their final year is Joseph Woll. On July 1st, the Maple Leafs signed Joseph Woll to a 3-year deal worth $3.66M AAV.

Joseph Woll is a goaltender who has recently emerged as a stud for Toronto, giving them solid games in net when they need it most. The first time we really saw a great display of the competitiveness of Woll was in the Florida Panthers series in the 2023 playoffs.

In 2024, Woll went 12-11-1 with a .907SV%, and a 2.94GAA. In reality, those numbers are not all that impressive. Years prior, in a smaller sample size of course, Woll had over a .910SV% in both of his previous seasons. Woll only played 3 games in the 2024 postseason, one of those appearances coming in relief of Ilya Samsonov. In both of the games that Woll started, Toronto was able to come out on top, with Woll posting a .964SV% and a 0.86GAA. Game 6 however, in the final seconds of the game Woll got hurt trying to make a post-to-post save, therefore taking him out of action for game 7.

The only issue with this deal is that there isn’t much to go off of in terms of his performance. With just over 40 games of real NHL experience, and an injury history worth noting, there is a chance this could backfire on the Leafs.

Will it? Probably not. Joe Woll is a great goaltender that has bailed the Leafs out time and time again, and especially at the AAV he’s locked in at, there won’t be any kind of a major problem over the next few years.
