Man City Nearing Agreement For Ilkay Gündogan Reunion

Manchester City are reportedly close to bringing back club legend Ilkay Gündogan according to multiple sources.

Gündogan will return to the Etihad after only one season with Barcelona where he transferred to last summer saying “It was my childhood dream”.

Sources have also confirmed that Gündogan will return to City on a free transfer after he and FC Barcelona mutually agreed to part ways.

Ikkay Gündogan returns to City where he spent seven seasons from 2016/2017-2022/2023 winning five Premier League titles and helping secure the treble in his final season at the Etihad.

Reportedly, Gündogan’s transfer will be announced on Wednesday with a possibility of him being included in the match-day squad when City takes on Ipswich Town this Saturday.

Before returning to City Gündogan received interest from Saudi club Al Nassr. Initially, when leaving Manchester, Gündogan had interest from rival Arsenal before ultimately signing with Barcelona.

On Monday, Gündogan announced his retirement from the German national team after making 82 appearances for his country.

City manager Pep Guardiola and Gündogan have maintained a close relationship which was likely a key factor that led to the reunion at the Etihad.

When Gündogan initially played with Man City, he and Guardiola lived in the same complex in Manchester.

Now the duo will link up once more as City looks for their historic fifth consecutive Premier League.

City opened their title defense with a 2-0 win on the road at Chelsea last weekend behind goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovačić.

Brazilian winger returned to City training on Wednesday after leaving the match against Chelsea with a knee problem.

Rodri missed training once again after the injury that he suffered with Spain in Euro 2024.

It remains unclear whether Rodri will return to the City squad for Saturday’s match with Ipswich Town or if he will remain sidelined.
