Magic Mitch Strikes Again in Leafs 4-3 OTW vs Oilers
In a game that was touted to be a tight, close hockey game, it was a mess that turned into a high energy game for both hockey clubs.
Both clubs scored early, with Adam Henrique (2) scoring first and Bobby McMann (6) scoring not long after.
Connor McDavid scored on the powerplay to begin the second period, bringing the Oilers to a 2-1 lead.
In the second frame, Edmonton lost defender Darnell Nurse to a hit from Leafs forward Ryan Reaves. Nurse was bloodied, and took some time to get up and off the ice. Reaves was assessed a 5-minute match penalty, and he awaits to hear from the DOPS.
In the third period, the Leafs seemed to have come alive. Knies and McMann scored 59 seconds apart in the third period to give Toronto the 3-2 lead, before Leon Draisaitl tied it with 1:29 left in regulation while playing 6-on-5.
In overtime, we all thought it was gonna be the Connor McDavid show. Edmonton won the face-off, and got the puck right to McDavid. Skating down the right side, he blows by the Toronto defense, and shoots it wide off of Stolarz’s pad. Toronto gains possession on a 2-on-1 with Tavares and Marner, with Marner breaking down the ice, shooting it past Stuart Skinner to bury the overtime winner for the Maple Leafs.
The Leafs have won back-to-back games in overtime, with John Tavares being a part of both plays.
“I just saw back pressure, just tried to play the (Oilers) 2-on-1 as best I could and try to read the pass,” Marner said. “Luckily I was able to do it and then just tried to jump up the ice quickly and realized I had John and saw an opening and took it. It felt good, you try to play with excitement and fun out there and those are games you kind of live for.”
“He was excellent,” Toronto coach Craig Berube said. “He did so much good in all facets of the game, penalty kill, power play, 5-on-5. He did a great job of breaking up that 2-on-1 on that play and going the other way and scoring… He wanted to get his 200th tonight so he got it.”
Toronto is back at it on Wednesday against the Golden Knights at Scotiabank Arena.
