Lowe, Semien Named Gold Glove Finalists
On Tuesday morning, the finalists for the Rawlings 2024 Gold Glove Awards were announced on Rawlings’ social media.
Texas Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and second baseman Marcus Semien were named finalists at their respective positions.
Lowe earned his second career nomination after winning the award last season following a steady defensive improvement.
In 2022 Lowe had a career-low in total zone total fielding runs above average (-3) and BIS defensive runs saved above average (-9)
Just a year later in 2023, Lowe jumped to eight and three in those categories respectively earning his first Gold Glove.
2024 was yet another solid defensive season for Lowe as he had career-highs in defensive run value (5) and outs above average (7).
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle and Minnesota Twins’ Carlos Santana are the other finalists at first base in the American League.
Santana is first in the AL with 14 outs above average and is tied with Mountcastle at +8 defensive runs saved.
Like Lowe, Marcus Semien is also seeking his second career Gold Glove after winning in 2021 when he was with the Blue Jays.
Semien has been a finalist in each of his now three seasons as a Ranger finishing behind Clevland’s Andres Giménez both seasons.
Giménez will once again join Semien as a finalist in a field rounded out by the White Sox’s Nicky Lopez.
2024 was another solid defensive season at second base for Marcus Semien despite a down year at the plate.
Semien is tied with Giménez for the Major League lead in outs above average at +19 and second in defensive runs saved at +10 ( Giménez +20).
With a run value of +14, Semien posted a career-high in a category in which he has steadily improved throughout his 12-year career.
Last season, the Rangers had five gold glove finalists with Jonah Heim, Corey Seager, and Adolis Garcia joining Lowe and Semien. Heim and Garcia joined Lowe in bringing home their first career Gold Glove Awards
