Los Angeles Dodgers Win World Series; Freddie Freeman Captures MVP Trophy
The Los Angeles Dodgers made sure the New York Yankees would not pull off an unprecedented World Series comeback from a 3-0 deficit.
Instead, the visiting Dodgers staged a comeback of their own to stun the Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 to capture their eighth World championship.
YANKEES BUILD …
New York amassed a 5-0 lead after three innings. Yankees fans must have been thinking that this series was heading back to LA and stretching into November.
Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back homers to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Anthony Verdugo hit an RBI single in the second, and Giancarlo Stanton added a solo homer in the third.
… DODGERS DESTROY
Los Angeles wiped out the entire lead with five runs in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole failed to cover first base, allowing Mookie Betts to beat out a run-scoring single.
The roof caved in on Cole after that blunder. Freddie Freeman hit a two-run single, and Teoscar Hernandez tied the game with a two-run double.
Stanton put the Yankees back in the lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to score Juan Soto, who is about to make a lot of money in free agency.
In the eighth, the Dodgers said, “I’ll see your sacrifice fly and raise you TWO sacrifice flies.”
Lux tied the game, and Betts drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Walker Buehler, who started Game 3 for the Dodgers, got the save by striking out two Yankees in the ninth.
The Dodgers, born in Brooklyn, celebrated a championship in the Big Apple.
Freeman won the MVP Award after hitting home runs in each of the first four games.
