Liam Coen is (nearly) the Jaguars Head Coach
The dust is settling within the walls of the Jacksonville Jaguars organization as they are closing in on securing Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen as their new head coach.
It all started when news came to light that Jaguars Shad Kahn said he’d be open to front office changes if it would be necessary to the plan of an incoming head coach. After missing out on both former Detroit Lions assistants Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn to the Chicago Bears and New York Jets respectively, Kahn finally learned the lesson that all members of the Duval Devout knew was fact, that general manager Trent Baalke had to go.
That may be the reason that hours after the Jaguars parted with Baalke news surrounding Coen’s extension with Tampa which would have made that highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL surfaced. The deal had gone unsigned with limited contact between Coen and the Buccaneers.
Kahn also recruited the Jaguars Hall of Famer Tony Boselli to assist in the hiring process along with interim general manager, Ethan Waugh. It was in the late hours of Thursday night that multiple outlets began confirming that Coen was the guy.
With Coen as the offensive coordinator, the Bucs offense was tops in five categories including scoring with Baker Mayfield at quarterback and wide receiver Chris Godwin getting hurt in the middle of the 2025 season. As Coen takes his position, the questions will turn to who the Jags will make their permanent GM and who the Jaguars will bring in as a defensive coordinator.
While there’s still a lot of offseason left and a lot of questions to be answered between now and the 2025 NFL draft, the Coen hiring and the peripheral moves could be the first of many steps to heal this football team from the damages the previous administration caused.
