Leody Taveras Delivers Rangers 7th Walkoff Win To Even Series With A’s

Consistency hasn’t exactly been a word that you would use when describing the Rangers 2024 season.

However, one thing that has remained constant is the Rangers playing in close games and finding a way to win them.

Saturday night was no different as the Rangers used Leody Taveras’ first career walkoff to take down the A’s 3-2 and even the series.

“I didn’t realize that’s his first one, good for him,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said after the game. “When you get down 0-2, you’re just hoping to put it in play and good things happen, that’s what he did, he found a hole there”.

Taveras’ walk-off single was the first walk-off hit by a nine-hole hitter since Delino DeShields on 4/20/17 against the Kansas City Royals.

The Rangers ninth inning rally was fueled by Nathaniel Lowe leading off the inning with a hit-by pitch, Carson Kelly blooping a single into left and Travis Jankowski drawing a walk to load the bases ahead of Taveras.

Nathaniel Lowe’s game-winning run was the first and only scored by Texas since Jonah Heim’s whacked a two-run home run in the second inning which opened the scoring.

Yet another low production night from the offense meant the Rangers’ pitching staff had to be strong once again and that they were.

Cody Bradford got the start and put together yet another solid outing going 7 innings allowing just 2 runs while striking out a career-high 8 batters.

“I felt like a lot of things were working for sure,” Bradford said after the game. “It’s just a combination of being prepared and trusting your stuff” the Rangers lefty went on to say.

With tonight’s start, Bradford is just the third left-handed starter in the modern era to post an ERA of 2.50 or lower, 50+ strikeouts, and 7 or fewer walks over their first 9 starts in a season.

Not only was Bradford lights out tonight, but the Rangers veteran duo of David Robertson and Kirby Yates were once again strong throwing a pair of scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th respectively to keep the game tied before Taveras won it in the ninth.

For the Rangers, it’s their 4th walk-off in their last 6 home wins and all of the theme of close games at Globe Life Field rolls on.

“Well, I think they’re getting used to it” Bochy said. “We’re playing a lot of tight ballgames and having to execute pitches, make plays and do little things to win a ballgame and they are doing a good job at that”.
