Lebron James has accomplished much in his legendary 21 years as a professional athlete. However, the Olympic flag bearer was not one of them… until now,

James has been voted by his fellow Team USA olympians to carry the American flag during the opening ceremony on the River Seine on Friday in Paris.

When Team USA floats down the iconic river later this week, Lebron James will become the first men’s basketball player to ever be the American flag bearer.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said.

“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

2024 will be James’ fourth Olympic games dawning the red white and blue and the first since 2012 when Team USA brought home one of its four straight gold medals.

If the Stars and Stripes can bring home a medal is expected, James will become the oldest Olympic men’s basketball medalist from any nation.

The American women’s flag bearer who will join James is set to be announced on Tuesday.
